Lawrence Edward “Boots” Bates

Lawrence Edward "Boots" Bates, a retired oilfield worker and farmer, died Nov. 22 at North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond. He was 84.


Mr. Bates was born in Walters, Okla., and lived in Kenner for many years.


Survivors include his wife, Verlie DeSota Bates; three sons, Lawrence H. Bates of Metairie, Don Gary Bates of Bogalusa and Paul E. Bates of Luling; five daughters, Lovell Jeanette Burrows of Gretna, Betty Reiniger of Rockport, Texas, Sandra Wallace of Bethel, Alaska, Juanita Lemoine of Springfield and Wanda Faye Dufour; his stepmother, Mildred Bates Whitacre of Bunkie; two sisters, Margarette Gooch of Fordoche and Ruby Copeland of Morrow; 30 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.


Burial was in Church of Christ Cemetery in Bayou Jacque. Melancon Funeral Home in Bunkie handled arrangements.
